Vandy Massey #1

I'm truly thrilled to be part of the One Hundred Washes team. What a fantastic way to end my first full year of painting!

I first picked up a paintbrush in October 2009 and have had an amazing time learning all about watercolours since then. There's just so much to discover and for me, that's part of the fun and excitement of painting.

As a latecomer to this challenge, I've got some catching up to do. So I may as well get on with it: Here's my first wash:

Cadmium orange, cadmiun yellow, alizarin, and cobolt – with some salt and bubblewrap effects.
I don't always create washes that are this exuberant, but this one was pure fun.

Paper: Langton NOT (Cold Press) Grain Fin 140lb
Size: 406 x 305

This wash was painted with no fixed idea about what the end result would look like, but a tree and a hedge have emerged. The tree is starting to take shape and the rest will follow in time.

Maggie Latham #28

This was painted on a quarter sheet, but cropped to 8x12 inches. I began this some months ago and it had many, many abstract washes and glazes. I never really liked it and it was a little too ‘green’ in the sky area. This morning I masked out some random abstract landscape shapes using masking fluid, and then added several more glazes and strong washes in certain areas…. then sponged out some of the paint, painted into it again, wiped away a bit of paint here and there…As I didn’t like it to begin with I had nothing to loose and I gradually pulled it together using various techniques. Now it’s cropped and in a mount/mat I actually don’t mind it that much anymore.
I would like to pursue a good deal more experimental ideas with washes in the New Year.

Too many different colours used to remember and I think the paper is Saunders Waterford extra White 420gsm….not sure, though.

Here it is just after I added a wash on top of dried masking fluid.....

Another one I just finished and has dried…. this was started from scratch this morning, using a little masking fluid for the tree trunks first and mostly Winsor Violet, FUB and Cad Orange.

It smells mandarin wash !
Ca sent le lavis à la mandarine !

Click twice on images to ZOOM.

I loved how orange cadmium and mars violet worked together.
First, I painted with orange and wait few seconds, then mars violet.
After that, I mixed colbalt and sienna...wich wanted to taste madarin too ! Do you believe it ?

Paper : The Langton Prestige - Mould made - 140lb - Daler Rowney

Finally I ate the mandarin !!
Finalement, j'ai mangé la mandarine !

#25 Prussian blue and aureolin yellow, well mixed on the palette first, on Fabriano paper, wet in wet. I really like this one! The big bully prussian blue melts well with the aureolin and give a rich, intense green.

26# Prussian blue and cad yellow on Fabriano paper, wet into wet. I mixed the paint roughly with the brush on the palette, then allowed them to blend on the wet paper.

Suzanne Lindfield #23 #24

#23 Moving into green! Cerulean blue and aureolin yellow on Fabriano paper - I didn't mix the paint completely on the palette and let it blend more on paper.

#24 Cerulean blue and cad yellow on Fabriano paper, I blended the colours on the palette first. It's a lovely lime green, which I'll use again. Is cad yellow opaque, does anyone know?

Maggie Latham #27

11 x 3 inches…long and skinny on Arches 140lb cp (not) paper. Cad Orange, Perm Aliz Crimson and Neutral Tint.  All painted wet on dry in one pass while everything was still wet with the exception of a final glaze in the water area when everything was dry.

Maggie Latham #26

FUB, Burnt Umber and Neutral Tint. 9.5 x 5.5 inches on 140lb Arches cp (not) paper. Wet on dry, with sky painted first and middle and foreground painted when sky washes were dry.  Trying for an emotional response to the scene in this one and not a realistic interpretation.

Working with blue in the previous washes gave me confidfence to try out blue in a version of another painting, In the Quakers Garden. Initial sketch of the plat leaves and berries. Wet-in-wet prussian blue and cerulean blue with a touch of burnt sienna on Langton extra smooth hot pressed paper. (I like the paper!)

Suzanne Lindfield #20

This is my favourite! Prussian blue bullying its way into the lower cerulea blue wash. The intricate details made by the prussian on the left are fascinating.
On Fabriano paper.

Suzanne Lindfield #17 #18 #19

Experimenting with blues and colour combinations with blue,  as I don't normally use any blues in my painting. From top:
17) Cerulean blue (top), alizarin crimson and prussian blue on Fabriano paper.
18) Cerulean blue and yellow ochre
19) Prussian blue, indigo and ultramarine. That prussian blue really bullies the others!

Suzanne Lindfield #16 Christmas Lightsii

See post below for details. Second stage, painted wet-in-dry, waterolour pencil.

Suzanne Lindfield #16 Christmas Lights

I made a set of paper lanterns to hang on fairy lights and we put them up every year. The light is so warm from them that we started to call them "winter lights" and now leave them up until March 1. The lanterns are stars, moons and arabesque shapes in jewel colours. Here's my interpretation!
Cad yellow, quinacridone red and dioxazine violet.

Suzanne Lindfield #15

Indigo, splashes of yellow ochre and a little dixozine violet on Cotman cp paper. Done in two stages, the initial wash was splattered with a little water from a spray bottle. The second stage I just added some tree shapes wet-in-dry.

Suzanne Lindfield # 14

Poinsettia inspiration! Quinacridone red and mix of cerulean blue and cad yellow on Cotman cp paper. The qui red doesn't spread very well and bullies the green into watery streaks.  I will work back into this in negative painting.

Suzanne Lindfield #13

The view from my window - the roof of a house in the snow! Indigo on Cotman cp paper.

Cobalt blue deep ... I missed you  !
Look, blue is so soft through the combination alizarin crissom and vivid...

Dear watercolourists I wish you all a very happy Christmas and all best wishes for 2011!
My productivity levels have been shamefully low as work has got in the way over the past three weeks. However this will be turned around as I set myself back to work over the next few days - yes, there's nothing I love better over the holidays than painting!
Have a lovely break all, keep warm and safe!

Cobalt green and indigo on Cotman cold pressed paper. I used an old straggly brush to get the rough lines. While the cobalt green is a beautiful shade of green, it's quite chalky and is not transparent. I love the transaparency of watercolours so I'm not sure I'd use this again. As the paint settled in the palette, a white chalky substance rose to the top - yuch!

note to self:  get a bigger mop brush!  I have one lovely big brush, a number 30 and it holds a huge amount of paint and water. The top is tapered which gives great control for corners and fine work, but not great to make great big swirling washes.

Suzanne Lindfield #11

Dioxine voilet and indigo on Cotman cold pressed paper. It was fun to watch the streaks of paint as the travelled the distance to the bottom of the page and spread out in tiny lines.

Indigo and yellow ochre on fabriano paper. Just watching how the colours mingle and flow on this type of paper - still getting used to it!

I like to move my washes by drying in several ways.
It is also interesting to twist the sheet of paper. Arches Rough  is resistant to torture. Soon,I will  try to wash folding paper. What do you think about?
